Welcome to the Next Step website, the way forward for people with severe mental illness

  • Do you have, or suspect you have, a severe mental illness?
  • Do you feel as though you are ruled by your illness or are unable to move forward?
  • Do you want to take control of your life and achieve recovery?

If so, then the Next Step website is designed for you. This website has been developed by Hafal, Wales’ charity for people with severe mental illness, and is based on the experiences and insights of hundreds of our clients. It provides you with the tools you need to:

  • be in control of your illness
  • look at all areas of your life, take stock and set goals
  • be positive and move forward as you reach recovery.

What is recovery? Recovery is a way of regaining mental health and achieving a better quality of life. It is focused on empowering people to improve their lives in all areas rather than just maintaining an adequate existence.

Who is recovery for? Recovery is for everybody. Everyone can take steps to improve their mental health and achieve a better quality of life. But it is also the right of people who experience mental illness to make improvements in all areas of their lives which together contribute to mental health.

When people experience mental illness it’s helpful to be more methodical in looking at how to improve their lives and approach recovery. This Next Step website offers that methodical approach.

Where do I start?

Right here. What you need to do is to work your way through the following steps and click through to the linked guides if and when you need to (the guides are available as pdfs, so you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open them).
